I am veru interested in Smart Meters and how they can bring better management of energy into our homes and lives. Interestingly, your article seems to cover all the benefits of smart metering but does not address how it would be implemented.
Smart meters have been deployed around the world in many different technologies, the main requirement being that the smart meter needs to be able to communicate back in either real time or near real time with a grid management system.
In Ireland we all know that broadband is not very good or even available in many rural areas. So what technology could be used? I think this is where a technology such as Wireless BB could really make a difference and pay for itself in terms of deployment and usage.
Thanks for the comment. I’m not sure what technology they are planning on using, but I don;t think they need to go as far as broadband. I mean the amount of information to be transmitted is relatively low compared to youtube videos. Just a few bytes about rate, quantity, instructions etc.
I know that they have the ability to send signals on the pelectricity wires, but I’m not sure if there would be capacity if everyone had it that way.
Otherwise a regular phoneline, or the mobile network would do the job.
